Why We use Softwood

Better for the environment

At Albany Timbercraft we are committed to being environmentally friendly. All of the timber we use is sourced from suppliers that support the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) who ensure that timber comes from certified forests and is therefore, sustainably managed to ensure long term timber supplies while protecting the environment and the lives of forest-dependent people. By using this sustainable material, we are helping to preserve the world's natural resources for future generations, while meeting the needs of the present.

The industry’s choice

As well as being more ecological, softwood timber is traditionally used in construction as the prime material for structural timber components. It accounts for 80% of the world's production of timber.
It is an ideal material for building and is used for everything from floor joists through to roof structures, including timber frame housing.

Looks fantastic

Softwood is a sustainable alternative to Oak, without compromising on quality or aesthetics

More cost effective

Softwoods are more cost effective than hard woods, such as Oak, and they can last just as long.

Built to last

To prolong the life of your wood, a process called ‘tanalising’ is used. This involves impregnating the wood with the environmentally friendly preservative Tanalith E. The whole process takes place under carefully controlled conditions in a vacuum pressure timber impregnation plant and gives the timber incredible longevity and protection from fungi and insects.

Protected wood needs no further maintenance treatment but will naturally weather over time losing colour and developing cracks. These are not detrimental to the long term durability of the product and give it character. Properly cared for timber framed buildings can last a lifetime.
